Ethos and Instagram

The two celebrities I chose were Bill Nye and Kim Kardashian. These two Instagram’s differ from one another greatly. While Bill Nye may post the occasional selfie with other people, he post very informational things that he wants teach the public or remind them of. While Kim Kardashian may also post selfies with others, her Instagram is mainly centered around pictures of her. She tries to make her character appear as if she is almost a perfect individual.

For me personally my ethos or character on Instagram is mainly centered around my family and friends. In the “modern love essay” she talks about how she makes herself look more interesting and in a way lies about her life, I believe my personal social media is a great representation of who I am as a person.

Dear sugar,

Dear Unsure,

I do intend to reveal who I am in the next month. I have thought long and hard about this decision. As you said it may ruin the magic but it has come time that everyone knows who I am. One main reasoning behind me revealing myself now is that I have grown tired of hiding behind the persona of Sugar. While I have vastly enjoyed getting to read every ones questions and respond back to them, it has come to put a strain on me. I am still unsure to if I am going to continue doing the “Dear Sugar” column at this moment. I am hoping to have made that decision by the time I reveal who I am to everyone. If I were to continue to do “Dear Sugar” I believe i would stay under the name of Sugar but of course people will know who I am by then.

yours, Sugar

Repeat after me

The author seems to have a very close relationship with his sister. He talks about moving in with her after he gets thrown out of his parents home. The author talks about her always being in charge and expecting her to get a masters degree, I believe this show that he looked up to her when they were younger. To me the author only really gets along with this one sister. He talks about his other siblings in this passage but doesn’t take to the others as much as he does his sister. I think he even considers Henry apart of their family now .

Escape

After watching the episode “escape” the three main people all have different ways of escaping. For Mike I believe escaping for him means to get away from living with his mother and to move out and live on his own. Mike also find escape in the way he presents himself with colored hair, painted nails, and all black clothing. Mikes mother finds a literal escape when she gets a week from caring for Mike everyday to go to up-state New York. I believe Mike and Sarah both find an escape when they’re with each other. Every person has a reason behind their actions, to me the reasoning behind Mikes actions of hiring his own assistants is to give him a break from his mother and actually just have a actual friend. The mothers actions are purely out of love for her son, she sleeps on the floor at the foot of her 27 year old sons bed just to take care of him. To me the motivations behind Sarah’s actions are unclear to me. Maybe she just had a fetish to what he was at first or maybe she was genuinely interested in him. I wondered who had the most power between the three, I think Mike holds the power out of the three. While he may have physical disability’s, he is still a 27 year old man and can make choices for himself. He may need help with things but he is more than capable to make his own choices.

I believe this episode shows the relationship between Mike and his mother the most. While Mike is her child and she cares dearly for him but at the same time he just wants his own freedom. Mike wants to be able to make his own decisions even if it cost him his life. While his mother wants spend the rest of her life taking care of him just to keep him alive because she cares so much for him.

Questioning the Text

Before just looking at the title “Under the Influence, paying the price of my father’s booze” I right off the bat can tell this story is gonna be about this persons alcoholic father. The title makes the before hand look very easy to figure out what you’ll be reading about.

Parts of Speech

  1. Jabberwock- noun- dragon
  2. Beamish- adj.- excited
  3. Frabjous- adj.- happy
  4. Brillig- noun- bright
  5. Slithy- adj.- slimy
  6. Toves- noun- cave

  10. Mimsy- adj.- magic
  11. Borogroves- noun- people
  12. Mome- noun- mother

  14. Outgrabe- verb- cries

And hast thou slain the dragon? Come to my arms, my excited boy! O happy day! Callooh! Callay!” He chortled in his joy. ’Twas bright, and the slimy caves, Did slip and slide in the rain: All magic were the people, And the mother angrily cries.

Undertakings

In the essay “The Undertaking”, the author Lynch argues that people can’t really come to terms with death anymore. In the video Lynch talks about how families will sometimes only have a small ceremony and wont have a full process. I believe this is due to the fact that times have changed and that families and individuals cannot always cope with that family member or friend being gone. While some can come to terms about loved ones passing on, for example in the video about “The Undertaking”, the mother and father of the two year old who is dying have come to terms with whats going on. While their peers keep trying to make a reason as to why the child will live or just make the parents feel better they know how it will all end. So for these reasons I do agree with Lynch.

Hermit Crab

“I am the commonest…. original home” (pg. 268). I believe this connects to the hermit crab because, she talks about being a refugee and liking her new home just like hermit crabs have to change their “homes”. “It feels strange…. of the moon;” this quote connects to the hermit crab because they hide in their shells from the unknown and the author talks about how we hide from the”influence of the moon” (pg. 273)

Selfie

Personally I do not take selfies, but most people who take selfies look to capture a few things within the picture. Good lighting is something anyone who takes pictures in general looks for. Some look for certain angles to make themselves or others look better. Majority of selfies are a play off of more well-known images because if a celebrity takes a picture in a certain position and gets 500,000 likes, individuals think “if i do the same thing they’re doing and that many people liked what they done, then more people are sure to like it if I do the same”. Selfies can also show characteristics of maybe say masculinity or femininity, if you use filters or pose certain ways its seen as more feminine. Most males only do a hand full of things for pictures and that is their idea of how to show masculinity in a picture.

“Mirrorings”

I believe she talks about all these reflective objects because she notices herself in every little detail and in every little place so she would avoid them to not have to look. She introduces ideas of disguise by talking about even physically wearing a hat in public to enjoying halloween because she could wear a mask to disguise herself and blend into everyone and everything during that small time. Grealy even talks about seeing herself as an Indian woman walking down the street, through the forest and having to be ready to fight or flee from the “big cats”.

The observation that she comes to is that people who are dead may only know they’re dead when they can no longer see themselves in the mirror and this is a big revelation for her because shes not seen herself for so long that she has not been living a real life shes just been hiding from herself and others. Grealy is surely right about dead people may only know they’re dead after looking in the mirror and not seeing anything but now at the end she comes to a certain acceptance with her physical appearance.
