I believe she talks about all these reflective objects because she notices herself in every little detail and in every little place so she would avoid them to not have to look. She introduces ideas of disguise by talking about even physically wearing a hat in public to enjoying halloween because she could wear a mask to disguise herself and blend into everyone and everything during that small time. Grealy even talks about seeing herself as an Indian woman walking down the street, through the forest and having to be ready to fight or flee from the “big cats”.
The observation that she comes to is that people who are dead may only know they’re dead when they can no longer see themselves in the mirror and this is a big revelation for her because shes not seen herself for so long that she has not been living a real life shes just been hiding from herself and others. Grealy is surely right about dead people may only know they’re dead after looking in the mirror and not seeing anything but now at the end she comes to a certain acceptance with her physical appearance.
